SMOKED CERAMICS

Technique: To begin with the vessel is coated before the first firing, which is at a temperature of 950°c, with a type of slip called " terrasigillata" which produces a smooth, silky sheen and fired. The vessel is then covered with a material called 'slari'. Only the areas one wants to expose to the smoke are left uncovered. These areas will become black. To create the smoke a pit or a tindrum is filled with the clay vessels and packed with material that burns easily, such as crumpled newspapers and sawdust, which when lit results in a strong fire. The barrel is then covered to extinguish the fire. Smoke from the extinguished fire then penetrates the areas not covered and creates the smoked effect.
