MY BIOGRAPHY
|
The need to create. This was always part of my life. The path I chose was ceramics. To understand the forces that shaped my art I would like to share a little of my childhood with you. I grew up in a small farming village, RAMAT-HADAR, in Israel where my parents had a chicken farm. Here the beauty of nature, its rhythm and movement, its exciting, never-ending changes in color led me to my two passions in life, dance and the art of ceramics. My connection to the land , to its history and the history of my people have been my inspiration and have followed me from my earliest years. My links to the history of my people show up in the forms I make and the inscriptions on my Judaica art work. Israel shares the Mediterranean Sea coast as well as the Red Sea with its neighbors. I love to dive and discover all the different forms the sea has sculpted. The sea is one of my great inspirations. By the age of 10 I would dig my fingers into the thick black earth and form shapes from the muddy clay which would later develop into the forms you now see on my website. My uncle, Aharon Kahanah, a well know Israeli artist, would open up his studio to me and encourage and show me how to extend myself. When I had to decide on what direction to take I first chose to do a degree in Physical Education. Here I developed my love of movement, music and dance. I graduated at 20. I then joined a professional dance group for folklore and creative dancing. Here I danced and did work as a choreographer. We appeared in Europe, the Balkans and Scandinavia. At the same time I started to study ceramics at the Bezalel School of Arts in Jerusalem. At that time I was faced with the choice of choosing dance and music or ceramics. I chose ceramics. From that time on I have been involved in developing my art, exhibiting, teaching and selling my work. My life is a rewarding experience of creating and being able to pass on my love of this medium to my students. In the city of Herzlia, where I now live, my garden keeps me in touch with nature. There my ceramic sculptures and plants and flowers blend and grow together. I have two sons. My eldest son is a successful lawyer with three children, the last one born in June, 2000. My youngest son is a qualified lawyer but has chosen to follow another path. He is a sculptor and a writer. He has published three books. My grandchildren are my joy. I love opening up their eyes to the wonder around us, to share in my need to create. |
